our sustainability philosophy

boots-on-the-ground grit

We know that what we put into this planet, we get back. We respect the land, value clean inputs, and believe our operation should improve the place we call home.

Trawa’s farm is like most you’ll see along the countryside in Minnesota. With a fun twist: at the helm of this ship is Colin Jones, top Cannabis researcher with his Masters in Sustainable Farming from the University of Minnesota. We don’t just talk the sustainable talk, we walk the walk.

Our mixed-light cultivation relies on natural sunlight, reducing energy demands while still meeting quality standards. By growing primarily in coco coir and recapturing runoff, we use fewer resources and protect local ecosystems.

And that’s just the grow. We also focus on positive impacts on the community in Central Minnesota giving 1% of profits back to the local township to improve the lives of the community.

RESPECTING THE ROOTS

how we grow smarter

SUN FIRST

Use of natural sunlight first to reduce energy consumption but switch to lights to make sure we get our partners what they need.

what we grow in matters

We use pure coco coir because it supports cannabis, composts cleanly, and supports a closed-loop operation.

EVERY DROP COUNTS

We track all of our water use, reuse what we can for outdoor irrigation, and test what’s left to ensure it meets environmental standards

compoSTing IS ESSENTIAL

We’re building compost into the core of our process, literally. Our custom composting system allows us to break down used grow material on-site.

FARM

Growing good cannabis and doing it sustainably takes more than good intentions. It takes systems, consistency, and a lot of curiosity. I’ve spent the last decade researching cannabis and sustainable ag at the University of Minnesota, and I brought that mindset with me to Trawa.

We keep a close eye on the details: water use, inputs, plant health because that’s how you grow clean, consistent flower. We test our irrigation water regularly and reuse what we can. It’s not about being flashy or using industry buzzwords. It’s just about doing things right.

We grow in pure, compostable coco coir. No fillers. No junk. And we’re serious about composting, from fan leaves to root balls. If it can break down and give back, it does.

We’re still early, but we’re building something solid. Thoughtful. And meant to last.

FRIENDLY FARMING

We are honest about what works & what doesn’t

  • We don’t pretend we’re zero-waste but composting is happening throughout
  • Our tractors and transport aren’t perfect. We’re tracking consumption and exploring cleaner alternatives
  • Aiming for carbon-efficient hosting on renewable-powered servers
  • Creating pollinator sections on the farm to make our bee friends happy
